To start, you will only need to apply for Medicare once. This is done through the Social Security Administration. You can stay with Original Medicare or enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan.
Medicare Advantage plans have an out-of-pocket limit. This means that after paying a set amount, Medicare will fully cover all eligible medical expenses.
Your Medicare plan will send Evidence of Coverage. Typically, you will receive it every September. This will detail what your plan covers and how much you need to pay. It is important to review your EOC to make sure your current plan has been meeting your needs.
Furthermore, you will also receive an Annual Notice of Change. Your ANOC will explain any upcoming changes in costs and coverage. You should receive this document every September and the changes will take place the following January.
In addition, Original Medicare, Parts A and B will automatically renew every year. This will occur if you pay your monthly premiums on time. Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Plan) will also automatically renew but benefits may change each year.
Along with inpatient care, outpatient care, and drug coverage, Medicare offers a variety of preventative and wellness services.
These include:
Cardiovascular Disease Screenings
Diabetes Screenings
Flu Shots
Nutritional Therapy Services
Initial Preventive Physical Exam
To be eligible for Medicare Advantage, you must be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B. Typically, your premium will be lower under this plan type. You may receive additional benefits such as dental, hearing, and vision coverage.
It is important to note that when you enroll in Medicare Advantage, you are no longer eligible for Medigap. Unlike Original Medicare, you must visit in-network care providers.
If you are interested in enrolling in a new plan, you must do so during the Medicare Open Enrollment Period. This is from October 15th to December 7th.
